Sod the Velominati rules. Sod them right now and damn them forever. Don't let a bunch of shaved, preened, colour co-ordinated fascists tell you how to enjoy your bike. Do what you gotta do.
1. Ride your bike when you want to. If it's too cold or too wet for you to enjoy riding your bike then DON'T; You aren't a Pro so missing a ride will not change your life. Your bike is supposed to be fun not a job.
2. Wear whatever keeps you comfortable when you ride; tight lycra, baggy tabbard, 3/4 pedal pusher jeans, even a hoodie with a bmx logo - anything, just as long as it makes you comfortable and you enjoy your ride. Don't be frightened to try things out that are not bike clothes - you are a free to choose.
3. Carry whatever you like on your bike - panniers are fine, huge saddle bags, although perhaps not if they foul your legs whilst pedaling (n.b. pedants). Even a top tube mounted food store is acceptable, if it keeps what you want where you want it and lets you get access when you need it. Pegs are welded to frames to carry pumps; only an f-wit would put a tiddly one in his jersey pocket if a full size one could be carried easily.
4 Let your bike reflect your personality - stuff the black only rule if it doesn't suit you; brown, blue, pink, yellow - whatever you want - just f-ing do it. Get on with it. You are an adult now and you don't need a bunch of small minded pricks to tell you what you can and cannot do.
The rules - there are none. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Here endeth the true lesson - do what you like - with thanks to Mackem Light, Gaz Wagon, Johnny L and P J Proudon.
